CDHB Medical & Dental job applicants from overseas

As you begin exploring the possibility of developing your career with the CDHB, it’s important to consider your eligibility, because – whilst we welcome the experience and backgrounds of our overseas staff members, there are a number of criteria that must first be met. Please read below and familiarise yourself with New Zealand’s immigration requirements.

Qualification clearance

Before you can commence work at CDHB you will need to gain clearance for your qualifications from the relevant New Zealand Professional Registration Boards and Bodies for more information go to the Medical Council of New Zealand or Dental Council of New Zealand.

Work Permits and Visas

If you are not a New Zealand or Australian citizen or resident, you must apply for a work permit at your nearest New Zealand Embassy or High Commission. This may take several weeks, so we recommend that you begin this process immediately.

CDHB – NZ Immigration Accredited Employer

The CDHB holds a Certificate of Accreditation with New Zealand Immigration Service. As an accredited employer CDHB is entitled to recruit workers or residents with the skills or talents required. The New Zealand Immigration Services website provides details on eligibility.

If you do not qualify to apply under the CDHB’s Certificate of Accreditation there may be other visas or permits which you may also be eligible for. Some of these are listed below. Full details can be found on the New Zealand Immigration Service website.

If you want to live and work in New Zealand permanently, there are a number of options available.

Skilled Migrant Category

The ‘Skilled Migrant’ Category is for employees who have the skills, qualifications and experience required. It is specifically aimed at people who want to live and work permanently in New Zealand.

Work to Residence

The ‘Work to Residence’ category allows you to get a temporary work visa and/or permit as a step towards gaining permanent residence. Applicants may be qualified in occupations that are in demand in New Zealand.

Residence from Work

The ‘Residence from Work’ category is for people who are already in New Zealand on a Work to Residence permit, and want to apply for residence.

Starting in August

Every year in August, we welcome a number of overseas doctors onto our staff. Because of the timing of our year, RMOs joining us in August will be joining us for the final quarter of our year. We are able to offer twelve month positions from August, however at the time of offer, only the run allocation for the August to November period may be specified. This is because the run allocations for the period beyond November (i.e. our new year) are not made until later in the year. All RMOs continuing beyond November are asked to express their run preferences for the coming year, and allocations are made on everyone’s preferences and taking into account the needs of the organisation.

Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Paediatrics

Overseas doctors planning to join the staff in August and wanting to be considered for runs in the above areas from November onwards need to ensure that they make a formal application for these runs in line with Annual Recruitment

Foundation Year 2

The CDHB is able to accommodate up to six Foundation Year 2 (FY2) candidates each year. We offer the experience and supervision required by the F2 programme.

While we are able to provide documentation for deaneries, we give an undertaking to ensure suitable run allocations to F2 candidates, rather than specifying which particular runs they will be given. This is because our run allocation process is timed to fit in with our own medical year, rather than the UK’s August to August timetable.

If F2 candidates are interested in working in any of the special areas listed above, they need to make an application in line with our annual recruitment process.

RMO Annual Recruitment

RMO Annual Recruitment opens in May each year. The application process for New Zealand residents and overseas applicants is the same, and you can find application details here.
